Iran hits back with missile and drone strikes after Israel attacks nuclear sites

As of June 14, 2025, the military confrontation between Israel and Iran has intensified, entering its second consecutive day. The exchange began with Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities and military leaders, leading to Iranian missile and drone retaliations.

Escalation of Hostilities

On the morning of June 13, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Iran, focusing on nuclear sites and military installations. The Israeli military reported significant damage to Iran’s nuclear program and the elimination of key military figures. In response, Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones at Israeli targets, including Tel Aviv, resulting in casualties and property damage. Iran reported at least 138 deaths, including 29 children, and over 320 injuries, while Israel confirmed three fatalities and dozens of injuries.

Strategic Targets and Military Movements

Israeli airstrikes have targeted various locations across Iran, including the South Pars gas field, which is among the world’s largest natural gas reserves. These attacks have disrupted Iran’s energy infrastructure, leading to power outages and economic repercussions.

In retaliation, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks at Israeli cities, causing significant damage and casualties. The Iranian military has also threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, in response to the Israeli strikes.

International Reactions and Diplomatic Efforts

The United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire, urging both nations to engage in dialogue to de-escalate the situation. However, diplomatic efforts have been complicated by the ongoing hostilities. Iran has canceled scheduled nuclear negotiations with the United States, citing the Israeli attacks as a violation of international agreements.

The United States has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself but has also urged restraint to prevent further escalation. President Donald Trump has proposed resuming nuclear talks with Iran, contingent on Tehran scaling down its nuclear activities.

Humanitarian Impact and Civilian Casualties

The ongoing conflict has taken a heavy toll on civilians in both countries. In Iran, residential areas have been hit by missile strikes, leading to numerous casualties. In Israel, air raid sirens and missile attacks have disrupted daily life, causing panic and displacement among residents. International organizations have expressed concern over the humanitarian situation and called for immediate assistance to affected populations.

Outlook and Future Developments

As the conflict continues, the risk of broader regional instability grows. The involvement of Iran’s proxies, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, could further complicate the situation. The international community remains engaged, with efforts underway to mediate a ceasefire and facilitate dialogue between Israel and Iran. However, the path to peace remains uncertain amid the escalating hostilities.
