Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Awujale of Ijebuland, Dies at 91

Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria – The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has died at the age of 91. The revered monarch passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at his residence in Ijebu-Ode. His death marks the end of a remarkable reign spanning over six decades, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving and most influential traditional rulers.

Early Life and Ascension to the Throne

Born on May 10, 1934, in Imupa, Ijebu-Ode, Oba Adetona hailed from the Anikinaiya royal house. He ascended the throne as Awujale on April 2, 1960, at the young age of 26, following the death of Oba Daniel Adesanya. His enthronement came during a pivotal period in Nigeria’s history, shortly before the nation gained independence.

A Reign of Legacy and Reform

During his 65-year reign, Oba Adetona emerged as a symbol of stability and modern traditional leadership. He was widely respected for his role in preserving Ijebu culture while promoting social development and educational advancement. He was the patron of the internationally recognized Ojude Oba Festival and a champion of civic engagement among Yoruba traditional institutions.

His philanthropic work included the endowment of the Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies at Olabisi Onabanjo University, which continues to produce experts in public administration and governance.

National Reactions and Tributes

The announcement of his death has drawn heartfelt tributes from across Nigeria. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun confirmed the monarch’s passing and described the day as “one of double sadness” for Nigeria, referring also to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari on the same day.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling Oba Adetona “a towering figure in Nigeria’s traditional institution” and “a man of wisdom and unimpeachable integrity.” The president highlighted the monarch’s influence beyond Ijebuland and his role as a bridge between tradition and modern governance.

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji also paid tribute, describing the monarch as “a leader of character, depth, and dignity.”

Mourning and Burial

In Ijebu-Ode, markets and public spaces were closed on Monday, July 14, 2025, as a mark of respect. The final funeral rites are scheduled to take place at 4:00 p.m. on July 14 at Ogbagba Court in Igbeba, within the royal residence complex.

Traditional councils, religious leaders, political figures, and residents of Ogun State are expected to attend the solemn ceremony.

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona’s death signifies the end of an era in Nigeria’s traditional leadership. His reign witnessed the transformation of Ijebuland into a hub of commerce, culture, and education.
