FG Postpones Special FEC Session in Honour of Buhari

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria has postponed the Special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, which was intended to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

What we know

Announcement by President Tinubu:
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement issued on Sunday, July 13, 2025, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman,” and directed that Nigerian flags be flown at half-mast nationwide for seven days in his honour.

Original Plan for the FEC Session:
The Special FEC session was initially scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. It was intended as a formal government platform to reflect on Buhari’s service to the nation and to begin arrangements for a full state honour in recognition of his contributions as both a military and civilian leader.

Purpose of the Session:
The meeting was expected to result in formal decisions regarding state protocols and funeral arrangements, marking the official commencement of national tributes to the late president, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

Reason for the Postponement

Though no official reason has been publicly provided, sources close to the presidency suggest that the postponement may be due to logistics and ceremonial considerations as preparations for a state funeral are still ongoing. A new date is expected to be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in due course.

National Mourning and State Protocols

Flag Orders:
As part of the national mourning directive, flags across federal and state institutions are to be flown at half-mast from July 13 through July 19, 2025.

State Honours:
President Tinubu has promised a state burial in accordance with Buhari’s stature and service. The postponed FEC meeting is expected to formalize these arrangements when rescheduled.

What Comes Next

  • A new date for the Special FEC session will be announced.
  • The federal government will continue coordinating state burial preparations.
  • Further announcements are expected regarding public memorial services and tributes from government officials, traditional institutions, and international dignitaries.
