ADC Declares Three-Day Mourning for Buhari

Abuja, Nigeria – July 14, 2025
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared a three-day period of mourning in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London. The declaration affects all levels of the party—national, state, and grassroots—and includes the suspension of all political activities during the mourning period.

Official Announcement

  • Commencement of Mourning:
The three-day observance begins Tuesday, July 15, 2025, and extends through Thursday, July 17. During this period, the ADC will halt all scheduled political engagements and public communications.
  • Source of the Declaration:
Interim National Chairman Senator David Mark, based in Kano, announced the mourning period in a statement, while Interim National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi confirmed the suspension of ADC’s political activities.

Tribute to Buhari’s Legacy

The ADC praised Buhari as a distinguished leader who served Nigeria with discipline, duty, and patriotism—first as a military Head of State and later as a democratically elected President. His life, according to the ADC, was characterised by integrity, humility, and public service. Members are urged to honour his memory by upholding these values.

Political and Ethical Concerns

Voicing strong concern, the ADC accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of hypocrisy for publicly mourning Buhari only after distancing themselves from his administration in recent years. The party warned Buhari’s supporters and family to remain vigilant against political opportunism.

Key Message from ADC

  • Disciplined Mourning: The party asked its supporters nationwide to observe the mourning period with solemnity and respect.
  • Legacy Preservation: ADC called on the Federal Government to immortalise Buhari’s contributions by naming institutions, erecting monuments, or sponsoring initiatives that reflect his commitment to national service.
