Lamine Yamal Faces Huge Fine After Controversial 18th Birthday Party

Barcelona football prodigy Lamine Yamal is currently under investigation by Spanish authorities following his 18th birthday party, which has sparked widespread controversy and accusations of violating disability rights laws.

The party, held at a luxury estate in Olivella near Barcelona, reportedly involved 200 to 250 guests and featured a mafia-themed celebration with casino-style games and strict no-phone policies. The event gained attention after Yamal posted a brief video on social media showing poker and roulette games alongside appearances from teammates such as Gavi and Lewandowski.

However, the celebration has drawn sharp criticism from the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE). The organization condemned the event, alleging that entertainers with dwarfism were hired as a form of entertainment, which they say perpetuates harmful stereotypes and violates Spain’s 2023 disability-rights legislation. The law prohibits performances that ridicule or demean people with disabilities.

ADEE’s president, Carolina Puente, stated: “It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, individuals with dwarfism are used as entertainment at private parties. The dignity and rights of our community must be respected.”

In response to the allegations, Spain’s Ministry for Social Rights has launched a formal investigation, coordinating with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ombudsman, and the Office for Combating Hate Crimes. Authorities are assessing whether the event breached relevant laws and considering penalties that could reach between €600,000 and €1 million.

Jesús Martín, Director General for Disability, emphasized that the law applies equally to all citizens, regardless of social status or wealth. “We are concerned that people with money and power believe they are untouchable. The law is for both the humble and the powerful,” he remarked.

Some performers involved in the event have defended their participation, asserting that they were treated respectfully and participated voluntarily. They also criticized ADEE’s response for potentially limiting employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Separately, Spanish model Claudia Calvo raised additional ethical concerns, claiming the event’s organizers sought out women with specific physical traits, highlighting issues related to objectification.

The controversy has prompted debate in the media, with commentators suggesting that Yamal’s youth and limited experience with fame may have contributed to the decisions made in organizing the party.

The investigation is ongoing, and should the authorities confirm violations of the law, Lamine Yamal could face substantial fines. Additionally, the case may lead to stricter enforcement or reform of laws concerning the treatment of individuals with disabilities in public and private events.

As of now, neither Yamal nor FC Barcelona have issued official statements regarding the matter.
