The driver involved in the fatal car crash that injured British boxing star Anthony Joshua and claimed the lives of two members of his team has been arraigned in court on charges of manslaughter.
The case was heard at a High Court in Ogun State, where the driver was formally charged following investigations into the accident that occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in late December. Prosecutors allege that reckless driving led to the collision, which resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach.
According to preliminary findings by law enforcement and road safety officials, the vehicle Joshua was traveling in reportedly collided with a truck along the highway. The incident sparked widespread attention due to Joshua’s involvement and renewed public concern over road safety on major Nigerian highways.
Anthony Joshua, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, was previously discharged from hospital and has since been recovering privately. He has not been listed as a defendant in the case but is considered a key witness as investigations continue.
The manslaughter charge reflects the seriousness of the incident under Nigerian law, where drivers may face criminal liability if dangerous driving results in loss of life. The court has adjourned the case to a later date to allow for further hearings and presentation of evidence.
