High UTME Score Not Enough: Navigating the Complexities of Tertiary Admissions in Nigeria

So, you aced your JAMB exam – congratulations! That’s a huge step towards your dream of going to university or polytechnic. But here’s the thing: a good JAMB score, while important, isn’t the only thing you need. Think of it like a key that opens the door a little, but there are other locks you need to unlock too.

Getting into higher education in Nigeria is competitive. Many students are vying for the same spots, so institutions have other ways to choose who gets in. Let’s break down what else you need to focus on:

1. Post-UTME Screening: The Second Test

Imagine your JAMB score got you an invitation to a party. The post-UTME is like a second, smaller party before the main one. Many schools, especially universities, have this extra step. It might be another test, an interview, or even a practical test, depending on what you want to study. They’re trying to see if you’re really a good fit for their program, beyond just your JAMB score. So, even with a great JAMB result, you need to prepare for this extra hurdle.

2. Your WAEC/NECO Results: The Foundation

Think of your WAEC or NECO results like the foundation of a building. You can’t build a strong house on a weak foundation, right? Universities and polytechnics have minimum grade requirements in certain subjects. You must meet these requirements to even be considered. Some schools even give points for your WAEC/NECO grades, which are added to your other scores.

3. Where You’re From: Catchment Area

Sometimes, schools give preference to students from their local area. This is called the “catchment area.” It’s like giving the people who live nearby a little advantage. So, someone from the catchment area with a slightly lower JAMB score might get in over someone from farther away with a slightly higher score. It’s not always the case, but it’s something to be aware of.

4. Other Things to Consider:

  • Quota System: This helps make sure students from all parts of Nigeria have a chance.
  • Course Competition: Some courses, like medicine or law, are super popular. You’ll need top-notch scores in everything to get in.

So, what can you do?

  • Aim High in JAMB: A good JAMB score is still important!
  • Prepare for Post-UTME: Don’t relax after JAMB! Study past questions and practice.
  • Ace Your WAEC/NECO: These results are crucial.
  • Research Your School: Find out exactly what they require. Each school is a little different.

Getting into university or polytechnic is a journey with a few steps. Don’t just focus on the JAMB exam. Prepare for everything, and you’ll greatly increase your chances of getting in!
