Abuja, Nigeria – Tragedy struck the Nigerian media industry as Somtochukwu Christelle “Sommie” Maduagwu, a 29-year-old presenter with Arise News, was killed during a robbery attack at her apartment in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.

What Happened
The robbers reportedly gained access to her apartment building around 3:00 a.m., overpowering security. In a bid to escape, Sommie attempted to flee through her balcony — believed to be on the third floor — and suffered fatal injuries from the fall.
Though she was rushed to a nearby hospital, eyewitnesses claim she was denied immediate treatment because she lacked a police report. She died shortly after.
A security guard on duty was also reportedly shot dead during the attack.
Public Outrage and Official Response
The incident has sparked national outrage, with many condemning the apparent failure of emergency care protocols and demanding justice.
The FCT Police Command confirmed the incident and has launched an investigation. Government officials, including the Minister of Information and the FCT Minister, expressed shock and extended condolences. They assured the public that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
A Promising Life Cut Short
Sommie Maduagwu was not just a respected news anchor — she was also a trained lawyer and a known advocate for women’s empowerment. Colleagues described her as passionate, articulate, and deeply committed to her work.
Her death has left colleagues, friends, and viewers mourning a young life lost too soon.

The tragedy has reignited debates on:
- Residential security gaps in Abuja and other urban areas.

- The safety of journalists and media workers in insecure environments.
