Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara has publicly dismissed speculation linking him to discussions about replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima as the potential running mate to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Dogara addressed the swirling political rumours during an interview, emphasising that he has no ongoing engagement or interest in repositioning himself for the vice‑presidential slot. He urged political commentators, party members and the public to refrain from attaching his name to speculative electoral narratives that he described as unfounded and unhelpful.
Dismissal of Speculation
According to Dogara, talk of a shift in Tinubu’s 2027 ticket — and specifically suggestions that he might replace Shettima — is purely speculative. He stated that such discussions distract from the substantive work of consolidating governance and addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
The former Speaker explained that he is focused on national unity, policy advocacy and contributing to the country’s democratic development in ways that do not involve being embroiled in running mate rumours. He added that healthy political discourse should centre on ideas and issues rather than personalities and conjecture.
Political Context
The speculation over the vice‑presidential slot has intensified amid the early buildup to the 2027 general election, with political actors and analysts debating potential combinations for the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Although Vice President Shettima has been widely referenced as a likely running mate for President Tinubu if he seeks re‑election, varying political dynamics have fuelled commentary about possible alternatives.
Dogara’s name reportedly came up in some political circles due to his experience, cross‑regional appeal and previous leadership role as Speaker. However, the former lawmaker dismissed this linkage as exaggerated and without factual basis.
Dogara’s Position
In making his stance clear, Dogara said he respects the political process and the right of party stakeholders to engage in dialogue about electoral choices. Yet, he emphasised that his personal political aspirations — if any — will be communicated directly by him when and if appropriate.
He urged party faithful and media practitioners to avoid “inventing stories” about his political ambitions, noting that unfounded narratives could undermine unity and distract from development discussions.
Looking Ahead
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, speculation about candidates and running mates is expected to increase. Dogara’s clarification seeks to remove his name from the list of possible vice‑presidential contenders and to temper expectations among those who have suggested he might be a key choice for APC’s ticket.
For now, Dogara’s message to the public is clear: “Leave me out of speculation on replacing Shettima as running mate.”
