FG Declares Public Holiday on Friday, September 5, for Eid‑ul‑Mawlid

Abuja, Nigeria — September 3, 2025 — The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Eid‑ul‑Mawlid, the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The announcement was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, who extended warm greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and around the world. In his message, the Minister called on the Muslim Ummah and all Nigerians to emulate the Prophet’s enduring virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion—noting that these values are essential for fostering national unity and progress.

Dr. Tunji‑Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for the country’s peace, security, and stability, while reaffirming their support for government initiatives aimed at promoting harmony and sustainable development. He described Eid‑ul‑Mawlid as a moment to strengthen bonds of brotherhood, encourage peaceful coexistence, and embrace the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity.

The Federal Government also emphasized the need for citizens to remain law‑abiding, security‑conscious, and committed to the collective well-being of the nation.

Significance of the Declaration

  • National Recognition of Eid‑ul‑Mawlid
This declaration reinforces the importance of Eid‑ul‑Mawlid as a national holiday, reflecting Nigeria’s commitment to honoring its rich Islamic heritage and religious diversity.
  • Promotion of Core Islamic Values
The government’s message encourages Nigerians to reflect on the Prophet’s life and to internalize values that are key to both personal growth and national development.
  • Call for Cross-Faith Unity
By inviting all Nigerians to join in the spirit of the occasion, regardless of religious background, the holiday serves as a unifying force for a multi-faith nation.
  • Civic Responsibility
The statement also reminds citizens of their responsibility to uphold law and order, while supporting the government’s efforts to build a peaceful and inclusive society.

As Muslims across the nation prepare to mark this solemn celebration, the Federal Government’s declaration stands as both a gesture of respect and a call to deeper reflection on the values that bind Nigerians together.
