Gov Aiyedatiwa Denies Backing Any Candidate Against 2027 Polls

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Aiyedatiwa has publicly denied claims that he has endorsed or is backing any political candidate for the 2027 general elections. The governor described the allegations as false and misleading, urging supporters and political commentators to disregard speculation about his involvement in candidate endorsements at this stage.

In a statement issued from the Governor’s Office in Akure, Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his commitment to remaining neutral and focused on governance until the appropriate time for political endorsements arrives. He said his priority is the ongoing development agenda for Ondo State, rather than early positioning or support for aspirants in the next general polls.

Clarifying His Position

Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed concern over circulating reports claiming that he was backing specific political figures in the buildup to the 2027 elections. According to him, such reports are not only untrue but also capable of creating unnecessary tension within his political party and the broader electorate.

He emphasised that as a sitting governor, his primary responsibility is to deliver good governance and improve the welfare of the people of Ondo State. The governor noted that aligning publicly with any one candidate months ahead of the polls could be misinterpreted and could undermine his administration’s work.

Reaffirming Commitment to Party and Peaceful Politics

While clarifying his stance, Aiyedatiwa underscored his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledged to support the party’s decision on candidacy and endorsements when the appropriate time comes. He urged political actors and members of the public to exercise patience and allow political structures within the party to function democratically.

The governor also called for peaceful political engagement in the state and warned against spreading unverified reports that could fuel division or misinform the public. He stressed the importance of issue‑based politics over personal endorsements and speculative alliances.

Context Ahead of 2027 General Elections

The 2027 elections in Nigeria are already generating speculation among political stakeholders, with various aspirants beginning to position themselves within different parties. Amid this early political activity, public figures are increasingly under scrutiny for their perceived endorsements and affiliations.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s denial reflects a broader concern among political office holders to avoid premature entanglement in campaign narratives, especially where such narratives could distract from governance priorities or disrupt party harmony.

Conclusion

Governor Rotimi Aiyedatiwa has firmly distanced himself from claims of backing any candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections. His clarification reaffirms his focus on governance, neutrality in political endorsements, and loyalty to democratic processes within his party. As the electoral cycle progresses, stakeholders will be watching closely how political endorsements evolve and how public office holders balance governance with emerging political ambitions.
