In a disturbing incident on September 17, 2025, Shamsideen Oladiti, a 55-year-old official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos Island, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a dispatch rider to death.
The altercation reportedly began when the rider allegedly scratched Oladiti’s vehicle. Witnesses claim that Oladiti, joined by his associates, brutally beat the rider, leading to his collapse. The victim was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries on September 17, 2025. His body has been deposited in the mortuary for an autopsy.
Following the incident, protests erupted at Oladiti’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, with sympathizers setting two of his motorcycles ablaze. The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.
The Lagos State Chairman of NURTW, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, also known as Sego, has distanced himself from Oladiti’s actions. In a statement, Adekunle expressed deep disappointment and emphasized that the union does not condone violence or unlawful acts. He called for a thorough investigation and assured that Oladiti would face internal disciplinary procedures if found guilty.
