NDLEA Cross River Commander Found Dead in Calabar Hotel

The Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Commander Morrison Ogbonna Uzoma, was found dead in his hotel room in Calabar on Thursday, September 18, 2025. He had recently assumed the position in August, succeeding Rachel Umebuali.

According to reports, Ogbonna was scheduled to lead his officers on engagements at 10:00 a.m. on the day of his death. When he did not respond to calls by 9:00 a.m., his officers, accompanied by hotel staff, attempted to contact him. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach him, a hotel attendant accessed the room through the ceiling and discovered his lifeless body inside.

The Cross River State Police Command was promptly alerted, and the Commissioner of Police visited the scene. An investigation into the cause of death is ongoing. To support the inquiry, the NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), has directed the Zonal Commander of Zone 14, Assistant Chief Narcotics Officer Mathew Ewah, to relocate to Calabar.

The NDLEA has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden loss of Commander Ogbonna. In a statement, the agency described his passing as a significant loss, especially given his recent appointment and the promising leadership he demonstrated. The agency extended condolences to his family and colleagues, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.

As investigations continue, the NDLEA and the Cross River State Police Command are working collaboratively to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of Commander Ogbonna.
