NLC Demands Immediate and Unconditional Release of Sowore

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Omoyele Sowore, the prominent Nigerian activist and publisher. This demand follows recent developments regarding Sowore’s detention by Nigerian authorities.

Background

Omoyele Sowore, founder of the online news platform Sahara Reporters and a vocal critic of the Nigerian government, has faced multiple arrests and detentions over the past years, often linked to his activism and calls for government accountability.

NLC’s Position

In a strongly worded statement, the NLC condemned what it described as unlawful detention and harassment of Sowore, asserting that his rights to freedom of expression and peaceful protest must be respected.

“Nigeria must uphold democratic values and protect the fundamental human rights of all its citizens, including activists like Sowore,” said the NLC President. “We demand his immediate and unconditional release as a matter of justice.”

Broader Implications

The NLC’s stance reflects growing concerns among civil society groups about the suppression of dissent and the curtailing of free speech in Nigeria. The labor union emphasized that protecting activists is essential for a healthy democracy and social progress.

Government Response

As of now, Nigerian government officials have not made any public comment regarding the NLC’s demand. The situation remains fluid as legal proceedings continue.

Solidarity from Other Groups

Several other organizations, including human rights groups and youth coalitions, have expressed support for Sowore and echoed calls for his release.
