In a devastating escalation of violence, over 100 individuals are feared dead following a series of coordinated attacks by suspected armed herders on multiple communities in Benue State, Nigeria. The assaults, which occurred over several days, have left residents in shock and fear, with many fleeing their homes in search of safety.

Details of the Attacks
The attacks targeted several communities across the Sankera axis of Benue State, including Ukum, Logo, and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas (LGAs). Reports indicate that the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, launched early morning raids on Friday, April 18, 2025. In Gbagir, Ukum LGA, five individuals were killed, while another 12 perished in Logo LGA, bringing the total death toll to 17 in these two areas alone .
Subsequent attacks on April 20 resulted in at least 80 additional deaths across communities in the Sankera region. Villages such as Gbagir, Tyuluv, Prof Daniel Saror village, Mbatyu, Tse-Ankon, and Une Tongov were among those affected. The assailants reportedly slaughtered victims and set numerous houses ablaze, leaving many residents homeless and traumatized .
In Katsina-Ala LGA, Chairman Alfred Atera alleged that over 100 persons were killed in four wards—Yooyo, Utange, Mbaturan/Mberev, and Mbayongo—by suspected herdsmen. He reported that the attackers had developed a strategy to carry out these killings and that residents were fleeing in large numbers as the violence continued .

The Benue State Government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the attacks and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. Governor Alia described the situation as a “carnage” and emphasized the need for increased security measures to protect residents.
National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu acknowledged the severe security challenges in the region and stated that President Bola Tinubu is working diligently to address the situation. Ribadu’s comments came during a meeting with stakeholders at the Benue Government House in Makurdi .
