Police Probe Viral Video of Portable Allegedly Beaten in Custody

The Ogun State Police Command has launched an internal investigation following the circulation of a viral video showing Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody.

The footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, has sparked widespread outrage and renewed conversations around police conduct and the treatment of suspects in detention.

Viral Footage Sparks Public Reaction

In the video, Portable is seen shirtless, handcuffed and visibly distressed while seated inside what appears to be a police facility. The singer is heard pleading emotionally, a scene that has drawn sharp criticism from Nigerians, fans and human rights advocates.

Many social media users condemned the alleged assault, describing it as disturbing and unacceptable, while calling for accountability and transparency from law enforcement authorities.

Police Confirm Investigation

Reacting to the development, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that an investigation has been opened into the incident. The police described the actions seen in the video as inappropriate and contrary to professional standards, stressing that the force does not condone the physical abuse of suspects under any circumstances.

According to the command’s spokesperson, officers found to have engaged in misconduct will be subjected to disciplinary measures in line with the law. The police also noted that the recording and circulation of such footage from within custody is not permitted and could compromise ongoing investigations.

Background to Portable’s Arrest

Portable was taken into custody following allegations bordering on assault and related offences. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute that occurred earlier in Ogun State. The singer has since been arraigned in court and remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.

Growing Calls for Accountability

The viral video has intensified calls for police reform and respect for human rights, with critics insisting that suspects — regardless of their status — must be treated with dignity and in accordance with the law.

As investigations continue, the public awaits the outcome of the police probe and any disciplinary action that may follow, while the case once again places the spotlight on custodial practices within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.
