President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic 78–64 victory over Mali in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship. This triumph marks their fifth consecutive title and seventh overall, solidifying their status as Africa’s premier women’s basketball team.

The final, held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, was a testament to the team’s resilience and skill. Despite trailing in the first quarter, D’Tigress showcased exceptional teamwork and determination, outscoring Mali in the subsequent quarters to clinch the championship.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded the team’s performance, highlighting their discipline, focus, and unity. He emphasized that these qualities have not only brought honor to Nigeria but have also earned respect for the players and coaches on the international stage.
The President also commended Head Coach Rena Wakama for her exemplary leadership. Wakama, the first woman to lead D’Tigress to an AfroBasket title, continues to inspire the team with her strategic acumen and dedication.
Looking ahead, President Tinubu assured D’Tigress of the government’s continued support as they prepare for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments scheduled for March 2026. He expressed eagerness to welcome the victorious team and the trophy to Abuja, wishing them a safe journey home.
