Tinubu dragged to ECOWAS court over emergency rule

Rivers State Electorates and the Ijaw Youth Council have taken a bold step by dragging President Bola Tinubu to the ECOWAS Court of Justice over the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State. This move comes after President Tinubu removed the elected Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, the Deputy Governor, and the entire members of the State House of Assembly.

The litigants, led by Comrade Ibiso Harry, are challenging President Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule, which they deem as illegal and an affront to the democratic principles of Nigeria. They argue that the President’s actions undermine the sovereignty of Rivers State and the rights of its people to choose their leaders.

The Ijaw Youth Council, in particular, is seeking justice at the ECOWAS Court, citing the need to protect the rights of the people of Rivers State and ensure that the rule of law is upheld. This development highlights the growing concerns about the erosion of democratic values in Nigeria and the need for institutions to respect the will of the people.

As this case unfolds, it will be crucial to watch how the ECOWAS Court of Justice navigates this complex issue and balances the interests of the Nigerian government with the rights of the people of Rivers State. One thing is clear: this case has far-reaching implications for the future of democracy in Nigeria.
